Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin pantocrator; Greek παντοκράτωρ.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin pantocrator (5th cent.; from 8th cent. in British sources) and its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek παντοκράτωρ almighty, in the New Testament (a title given to) God or Christ as the Almighty < ancient Greek παντο- panto- comb. form + -κράτωρ , representing either a neuter form parallel to κράτος strength (see -cracy comb. form), or an alteration of -κρατής (see -crat comb. form) after agent nouns in -τωρ.
A ruler of all things; (Christian Church) (a title given to) God or Christ as the Almighty. Hence: an artistic representation of Christ as ruler of the universe, esp. as an image in Byzantine and Orthodox iconography.
