Etymology: < post-classical Latin parabolismus (F. Viète 1591) < Hellenistic Greek παραβολή parabola n. in sense ‘division’ + classical Latin -ismus -ism suffix. N.E.D. (1904) indicates the stress as paˈrabolism.
Mathematics. Obsolete.
The reduction of an equation by dividing it by the coefficient of the unknown quantity of highest degree; an equation which has been reduced in this way.
