Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pakicetus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pakicetus, genus name < Paki- (in Pakistan , the name of the country where the fossil was first discovered) + classical Latin cētus whale (see cete n.¹).

Palaeontology.

A genus of extinct, carnivorous, partially aquatic ungulates of the early Tertiary period, thought to be related to mesonychids and artiodactyls, and to represent a group of primitive cetaceans (or their close ancestors).

1983 Associated Press (Nexis) 14 Apr. They believe Pakicetus spent most of its time on land because the red sediment beds in which it was found only form on land.

2002 Sci. Amer. May 75/1 With Pakicetus showing up around 50 million years ago and mesonychids known from around the same time in the same part of the world, it looked increasingly likely that cetaceans had indeed descended from the mesonychids or something closely related to them.
