Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Panaquilon.
Etymology: < German Panaquilon (S. Garriques 1854, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 90 231) < elements of the scientific Latin name Panax quinquefolius (see panax n.) + -on -one suffix.
Chemistry.
An amorphous, sweet substance of the saponin class, C32H56O14, occurring in American ginseng ( Panax quinquefolius).
