Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ὀξύτονος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀξύτονος sharp-sounding, piercing, in Hellenistic Greek also having an acute accent (see oxytone adj.) + -ous suffix. With sense 2 compare oxytone adj.
