Etymology: < over- prefix + wake v. Compare to wake over (see wake v. 2a). Compare Middle Dutch overwaken to stay awake, Middle High German überwachen to sleep too little (German überwachen to keep watch).The word apparently became obsolete at the end of the Old English period and was re-formed in the late 16th cent.
