1966 Times 21 May 8 Tonga has decided against calling its new decimal currency unit the dollar because the native word, ‘tola’, also means a pig's snout, the soft end of a coconut, or, in vulgar language, a mouth. The new unit, to be introduced next year, will be called ‘pa'anga’, which has only two alternative meanings—a coin-shaped seed and, not surprisingly, money.
1977 Washington Post (Nexis) 24 July e11 Of the nations who have recently cooperated, Tonga brought out a rectangular 1 pa'anga piece, and India issued four coins, of which one was diamond-shaped.
1991 Pacific Rev. 4 242 Akilisi Pohiva..and Viliami Fukofuka were each reported by the Times of Tonga to have returned about 12,000 pa'anga (US$1 = 1.3007 pa'anga in November 1990) to the Treasury.
