Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin syphiliticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin syphiliticus, adjective (1734 or earlier) and noun (1736 or earlier) < syphilis syphilis n. (stem syphilid- ) + -iticus -itic suffix, by analogy with adjectives in -itic suffix corresponding to nouns in -itis suffix denoting diseases. Compare French syphilitique (1664).
