Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ovulum n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ovulum n. + -ite suffix1. In sense 1a probably after French ovulite (Lamarck Extrait du cours de zool. sur les animaux sans vertèbres (1812) 26) or scientific Latin Ovulites (Lamarck Histoire naturelle des animaux sans vertèbres (1816) II. 193). With sense 2 compare earlier oolith n., and slightly later oolite n. 3. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (ōu·viuləit) /ˈəʊvjuːlaɪt/.

a. A fossil of ovoidal form and uncertain identity. Obsolete. rare.The principal form bearing the scientific Latin name Ovulites is an Eocene fossil originally supposed to be a foraminiferan but later identified as a calcareous alga.

1836 N. Amer. Rev. Oct. 439 Organic remains rarely occur, but Professor Hitchcock thinks he has found ovulites and scyphæ. The fossil, figured as the ovulite, is similar to species found in the clay at Bangor, Maine. Those found at the latter place are more cylindrical, and resemble in form the belemnite.
b. A fossil egg. Obsolete. rare.
