Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ouvreuse.
Etymology: < French ouvreuse usherette, woman who acts as doorkeeper for theatrical boxes (1694 in ouvreuse de loges ), specific use of feminine form (compare -euse suffix) corresponding to ouvreur opener, doorman < ouvrir to open (see overt adj.) + -eur -eur suffix.
In France: an usherette.
