Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: daughter n., -kin suffix.
Etymology: < daughter n. + -kin suffix, perhaps originally after Dutch dochterken (1598; compare German Töchterchen (Middle High German (in late sources) tochtirchīn)), in later use chiefly after German Töchterlein (Middle High German tohterlīn, töhterlīn).
Now rare.
A (little) daughter. Frequently as an affectionate form of address. Cf. daughterling n.Chiefly in translations and representations of Dutch or German speech.
