Etymology: < Middle French ottroyer (1164 in Old French as otroier , c1080 as otrier ; compare Anglo-Norman otroier , otreier , ottreier ), either < an unattested post-classical Latin *auctoricare ( < classical Latin auctor author n. + -icāre , verbal suffix), or < post-classical Latin auctorizare (see authorize v.). Compare Old Occitan autreiar , autrejar (first half of 12th cent.; Occitan autrejar ), Catalan atorgar (c1260; 1191 as auctorgar ), Spanish otorgar (1126–57; 1134 as atorgar ), Portuguese outorgar , autorgar (972 as auttorcare ). Compare slightly later octroy v.
