Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: orf n.1, gild n.2
Etymology: < orf n.1 + gild n.2The word is not attested in Old English. However, the antiquary and Anglo-Saxon scholar William Lambarde in Archaionomia (1568) f. 126, next to the words ‘quod dicitur ceapgeld’ (in Laws of William I), adds in the margin ‘al. orfgyld, quod idem est’ (ed. 1644 omits this); he may have had the authority of a lost manuscript for this word.

A payment in compensation for lost goods, spec. for stolen cattle.
