Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish orégano.
Etymology: < Spanish orégano (1490 in sense 2; in sense 1 sometimes more fully orégano mexicano ) < classical Latin orīganum origanum n. Compare Italian origano (a1320).
1. More fully Mexican oregano. Any of several tropical American shrubs of the genus Lippia (family Verbenaceae), esp. L. graveolens; (also) the aromatic leaves of these shrubs, used as a seasoning.
