Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin osteocolla.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin osteocolla (C. Gesner De Omni Rerum Fossilium (1565) f. 30) < osteo- osteo- comb. form + ancient Greek κόλλα glue (see colloid adj. and n.). Compare earlier sarcocolla n.
Geology. Now rare.
A calcareous deposit forming an incrustation on the roots and stems of plants in sandy ground, esp. in some parts of Germany.Formerly also called glue-bone stone, from its supposed ability to help the knitting of broken bones.
