Etymology: apparently < Gaelic crann tree + reodhadh freezing; but the Gaelic dictionaries give for ‘hoar-frost’ crith-reodhadh, lit. ‘shaking or quivering frost’. (The alleged Gaelic cranntarach in Jamieson is some error.)
