单词 opiet
释义

opietn.

Forms: 1600s opiet, 1600s opite, 1600s oppiot.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: oppie n., opier n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an alteration of oppie n. or opier n., after classical Latin opulus opulus n. (see discussion below). Compare earlier ople n.Compare also the following:1611 J. Florio Queen Anna's New World of Words 342 Oppio, Poppy, Piet or Wich-hazell. In form oppiot probably immediately after Italian oppio oppie n. This word is used in quots. 16012 and 1611 in discussions of classical Latin rumpotinus ( < rumpus branch of a vine, runner), which is described by Columella as any low, not very leafy tree used for supporting vines in Gaul, such as the opulus opulus n. (the reading now generally given in modern editions, although many manuscripts have populus poplar n.). Most manuscripts of Pliny have populus in the passages corresponding to quots. 16011 and 16012, hence the only tree named in the corresponding passages in Du Pinet's French translation of 1562 is the peuplier poplar n. The now generally accepted emendation to opulus is first suggested in late-16th cent. editions (e.g. those by Dalecamp (1587) and Pintianus (1593)). Quots. 16011 and 16012 may be intended to reflect both possibilities.
Obsolete.
A tree (not identified: perhaps the guelder rose, Viburnum opulus, or a kind of maple (perhaps Acer opalus)).
