Etymology: < oligo- comb. form + -clase comb. form, after German Oligoklas (A. Breithaupt 1826, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 8 79), so called because it was thought to have a less perfect cleavage than albite. Compare Swedish oligoklas (1827), French oligoclase (1844).

Mineralogy.

A sodium-rich triclinic plagioclase feldspar containing more calcium than albite, common in siliceous igneous rocks.
