Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Fon. Etymon: Fon vodunxwé.
Etymology: Apparently < Fon vodunxwé (not found in recent dictionaries, but compare note) < vodun (non-Christain) god, deity (see vodun n.) + xwé house, home. Compare Fon vodunxɔ, denoting a temple ( < vodun + building, house).Compare the following earlier example of the Fon word in an English context (with reference to West Africa):1874 J. A. Skertchy Dahomey as it Is iii. 54 The name [of the ‘snake house or Danh-hweh’] is derived from Danh, a snake, and Hweh, a residence. It is sometimes called Vodun-hweh, i.e., the fetiche house.
