Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin omphacinus.
Etymology: < classical Latin omphacinus made of unripe grapes, olives, etc. (Pliny) < ancient Greek ὀμϕάκινος < ὄμϕακ- , ὄμϕαξ unripe grape (further etymology uncertain; perhaps cognate with ὀμϕαλός omphalos n.) + -ινος -ine suffix2.With oil omphacine n. at sense B. 1 compare Hellenistic Greek ὀμϕάκινον ἔλαιον, classical Latin omphacinum oleum, and Middle French huile omphacin (1570). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·mfăsin) /ˈɒmfəsɪn/.
