Any of a family of proteins which occur in eukaryotes and bind to membrane phospholipids in the presence of calcium.Annexins have various functions and are involved in multiple cellular and physiological processes, including blood coagulation, the provision of membrane structure and transport, and the inflammatory response. ΚΠ 1986 M. J. Geisow in FEBS Lett. 203 99/1 In view of their similar biochemical and biophysical properties, we have coined the generic term ‘annexin’ for such proteins. 1993 Jrnl.
