Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French homoplate (13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman, c1370 in Middle French), Middle French, French omoplate (1534 in Rabelais) and its etymon classical Latin ōmoplatē (in post-classical Latin as homoplate : see quot. ?a14252) < ancient Greek ὠμοπλάτη < ὠμο- omo- comb. form + πλάτη broad surface, blade ( < base of πλατύς : see plat adj.). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ōu·mŏpleit, -plæt) /ˈəʊməpleɪt/ /-plæt/.
