Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rabaisser.
Etymology: < Middle French rabaisser to bring down, reduce, to come down, descend (12th cent. in Old French; French rabaisser ) < re- re- prefix + abaisser abase v., apparently with assimilation of the ending to abash v. (although compare β. forms at abase v. and discussion at that entry).
Obsolete. rare.
1. transitive. To bring (a person) down from a position of pride or presumption; = abash v. 1.
