Etymology: Obsolete variant of old adj., used to achieve an archaic effect. In of olde , obsolete variant of old n.1 Compare ye olde adj. and n.Brit. /ˈəʊldi/, U.S. /ˈoʊldi/ is a humorous spelling pronunciation.
Used as an archaism, originally commercially, later also frequently ironically, for old adj. Sometimes with other words spelt archaistically, as Olde English(e). Occasionally as n. in of olde: in an earlier time or period (cf. old n.1 4). Cf. olde worlde adj.
