单词 oesophagus
释义

oesophagusesophagusn.

Brit. /ᵻˈsɒfəɡəs/, /iːˈsɒfəɡəs/, U.S. /əˈsɑfəɡəs/
Inflections: Plural oesophagi, oesophaguses;
Forms: Middle English ysofagus, Middle English–1500s isophagus, Middle English–1500s ysophagum, Middle English–1500s ysophagus, 1500s hysophagus, 1500s isofagus, 1500s oisophagus, 1600s– oesophagus, 1700s– esophagus.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oesophagus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin oesophagus (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources (also as isofagus , isophagus , ysofagus , ysophagus ); 13th cent. in a continental source) < ancient Greek οἰσοϕάγος the gullet, probably < οἴσειν (used as future corresponding to ϕέρειν to carry, bear; of unknown origin) + ϕαγεῖν to eat (see -phagous comb. form, and note below). Compare Middle French œsophagus (1549). Compare oesophage n.If analysed correctly, the formation of ancient Greek οἰσοϕάγος is unusual, as -ϕάγος in compounds usually means ‘eating (something)’, ‘eater’.
