A small herbaceous plant, Shortia galacifolia (family Diapensiaceae), found in the southern Appalachians (where it is very rare) and cultivated elsewhere as a rockery plant for its small, white, bell-shaped flowers and evergreen foliage, resembling that of galax.

1956 H. Savage River of Carolinas: Santee 275 A farm boy brought home..a clump of galaxlike plants he had dug from the banks of the Catawba near Marion, North Carolina. So the lovely plant commonly known as Oconee bells was rediscovered.

1994 Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 121 386/1 Planted species, not native to New York State, included Celandine Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) and Oconee Bells (Shortia galacifolia).
