Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, Greek ὄρχις.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek ὄρχις testicle (see orchis n.), after German Nebenhode (1878 in the passage translated in quot. 18781).In plural form parorchids showing ὀρχιδ- , assumed stem of ancient Greek ὄρχις (see orchideous adj.). Compare French parorchide malposition of either or both of the testicles (1868 in Littré). N.E.D. (1904) enters this under parorchid and gives the pronunciation as (părǭ·ɹkid) /pəˈrɔːkɪd/.
