Etymology: < post-classical Latin paronychia whitlow (4th cent.; already in classical Latin as parōnychium , neuter, usually as plural, parōnychia ), plant reputed to cure whitlows (6th cent.) < ancient Greek παρωνυχία whitlow, in Hellenistic Greek also plant reputed to cure whitlows < παρα- para- prefix1 + ὀνυχ- , ὄνυξ nail (see onyx n.) + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare Middle French, French †paronychie whitlow (1555), the plant paronychia (1559), Middle French, French †paronychia the plant paronychia (1562), French †paronique (1778), paronyque (1840).
