Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ordinary adj., grade n.
Etymology: < the initial letter of ordinary adj. + grade n., after ordinary grade n. at ordinary adj. and adv. Compounds 2. Compare O level n.
Scottish. Education (now historical).
An examination taken or qualification gained at the end of compulsory schooling, at age 16, similar to the O level in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland; this level of education.The O grade began to be replaced by the Standard grade in 1986, a process which was largely complete by 1991. Cf. Standard grade n. at standard n., adj., and int. Compounds 2.
