Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: ocean n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ocean n. + -ite suffix1, after French océanite (A. Lacroix Minéral. de Madagascar (1923) III. iii. 49), so called because of the abundance of such rocks on ocean islands.
Geology.
Any of various dark-coloured basalts which are very rich in olivine.
