单词 gargoyle
释义

gargoylen.

Brit. /ˈɡɑːɡɔɪl/, U.S. /ˈɡɑrˌɡɔɪl/
Forms: Middle English gargulye, gargulle, gargoill, gargoyl, gargayle, plural gargouys, Middle English–1500s gargyle, 1500s gargylle, gargille, gargell(e, gargle, ( gargyne), 1500s–1600s gargel, gargil, 1600s gargile, Middle English, 1800s gargoyle, 1800s gorgoil, gurgoyl(e, ( gurgayle).
Etymology: < Old French gargouille (also gargoule , gargole , recorded in 13th cent.) = Spanish gargola ; apparently a special sense of gargouille throat (compare gargil n.1, gargle v.), from the water passing through the mouths of the figures. The form gurgoyle is perhaps due to the influence of medieval Latin gurgulio.
a. A grotesque spout, representing some animal or human figure, projecting from the gutter of a building (esp. in Gothic architecture), in order to carry the rainwater clear of the walls.
