One of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, believed to be the oldest; a member of this school. Also called Nyingmapa.Sometimes referred to as the Red Hat School because of the colour of the hats worn by the monks, this order claims to trace its lineage back to Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, who came to Tibet from Swat during the reign of King Thrisong Detsen (790-858).The other major schools of Tibetan Buddhism are the Gelug (also known as the Yellow Hat school), Sakya, and Kagyü schools (see Gelug n., Sakya n., Kagyu n.).
