Etymology: < classical Latin oculus eye, also bud, knob at the centre of the spiral scroll adorning capitals, marking resembling an eye. Compare French oculus small round church window (1852; compare sense 2).Classical Latin oculus is cognate with Sanskrit akṣ- , ancient Greek ὄσσεσθαι (see oss v.), ὄψεσθαι (see optic adj.), Old Church Slavonic oko , Russian oko , Lithuanian akis , and ultimately with the Germanic base of eye n.1
1. Botany. A leaf bud; = eye n.1 10b(a). Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
