Etymology: < classical Latin oculārius applied to the eye (in ocularia medicina oculary medicine), in post-classical Latin also designating a person who has seen a thing happening or being done (in ocularius testis eye-witness, in an undated saint's life in Du Cange: compare ocular witness at ocular adj. 1a) < oculus eye (see oculus n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare earlier ocular adj.
