Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Notus ; Greek Νότος ; -al suffix1, -ian suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Notus or ancient Greek Νότος the south wind, god of the south wind, the south (see Notus n.) + -al suffix1 + -ian suffix. Compare earlier Notogaea n. Compare also later notal adj.3In Cent. Dict. (1890), the region called Notalia is described as ‘the south temperate marine realm or zoölogical division of the waters of the globe, extending from the southern isocrymal of 68° to that of 44°’.
