Etymology: < classical Latin Notus or ancient Greek Νότος the south wind, god of the south wind, the south (see Notus n.) + -al suffix¹ + -ian suffix. Compare earlier Notogaea n. (1890), the region called Notalia is described as ‘the south temperate marine realm or zoölogical division of the waters of the globe, extending from the southern isocrymal of 68° to that of 44°’.
