Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: antho- comb. form, -lysis comb. form.
Etymology: < antho- comb. form + -lysis comb. form, after German Antholyse (1841 in the paper referred to in quot. 1842, or earlier; compare German Antholysis (1832 or earlier)), itself after scientific Latin antholysis (1832 ( G. Engelmann De antholysi prodromus) or earlier; see note).Engelmann attributes the scientific Latin word to F. C. L. Spenner ( Flora Friburgensis et regionum proxime adjacentium (1825–9); however, it has not been traced in Spenner’s work.
Botany. Now rare and chiefly historical.
Abnormality of a flower characterized by unusual division or separation of its organs, or transformation of the normal organs into parts resembling other organs, esp. leaves (= phyllody n. 1). Also: an instance or type of this (rare).
