1874 A. Liversidge in Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 615 Should it prove to exist in large quantities, as reported, and to become of commercial or other value then perhaps it may be advisable to name it after its locality.]
1874 A. Liversidge in Sydney Morning Herald 29 Sept. 6/1 I..propose that the mineral receive a distinctive name... It could not, perhaps, receive a better name than that of noumeite, after the town of Noumea, near which it occurs.
1875 A. Liversidge in Trans. Royal Soc. New S. Wales 75 Acting upon he Rev. W. B. Clarke's suggestion, I propose to substitute the name Garnierite for Noumeïte, which I first proposed for the pale green and adhesive mineral; and for the darker green and somewhat unctuous form I would venture to suggest the name of Noumeïte, formerly given to the first variety.
1881 Nature 10 Nov. 45/1 Some minerals from New Caledonia, including the nickel-bearing Noumeaite.
1882 Amer. Naturalist 16 528 The green nickle ore from New Caledonia..known by the name of Noumeite or Garnierite, is an amorphous hydrous silicate of magnesia, containing more or less admixture of oxide of nickle. It has been considered as allied to Genthite, though probably a mixture.
1980 Science 18 July 422/3 Many other terms..have been discredited because the deposits have been found to be mixtures of nickel silicates; for example, ‘garnierite,’ noumeite, and nepouite, all found in New Caledonia, are observed to consist of mixtures of pimelite and serpentine phases.
