Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nōtitia.
Etymology: < classical Latin nōtitia acquaintance (with a person), knowledge, idea, fame, notoriety, in post-classical Latin also list, register, document (from 6th cent.) < nōtus known (see notify v.) + -itia -ice suffix1. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nouti·ʃiă) /nəʊˈtɪʃ(ɪ)ə/.
