Etymology: < post-classical Latin noscitur a sociis he is known from his companions < classical Latin nōscitur , 3rd singular present passive indicative of nōscere to know (see know v.) + ā by, from + sociīs , ablative plural of socius companion (see socio- comb. form).In form noscitur a socio after classical Latin sociō, ablative singular of socius.
