Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nolle prosequi.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nolle prosequi ‘to be unwilling to pursue’ < classical Latin nōlle to be unwilling ( < ne- not (see ne adv.1) + velle to wish (see volition n.), with remodelling of the first syllable after nōlō , 1st person singular indicative) + prōsequī to pursue (see prosecute v.). Compare the post-classical Latin phrase ulterius prosequi non vult (Coke, 1555).In form noli prosequi probably after classical Latin nōlī, 2nd person singular imperative of nōlle. In form nolo prosequi probably after classical Latin nōlō, 1st person singular indicative of nōlle.
