Brit. /ˌnəʊlɪ mɪ ˈtan(d)ʒəri/, /ˌnəʊlɪ meɪ ˈtan(d)ʒəreɪ/, U.S. /ˌnoʊli ˌmi ˈtɑndʒəri/, /ˌnoʊli ˌmeɪ ˈtɑndʒəreɪ/
Forms: Middle English–1500s noly me tangere, Middle English– noli me tangere, 1800s nolitangere, 1800s nollimy tangere. Also with capital initial(s).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin noli me tangere.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin noli me tangere ‘do not touch me’, words spoken by Jesus to Mary Magdalene at the sepulchre (Vulgate, John 20:17; compare sense A. 5; c1200 in a British source in sense A. 1; 16th cent. or earlier in sense A. 3) < classical Latin nōlī , 2nd person singular imperative of nōlle to be unwilling (see nolle prosequi n.) + , accusative of 1st person singular personal pronoun (see me pron.1) + tangere to touch (see tangent n.). Compare Middle French noli me tangere (c1300 in sense A. 1). With sense A. 3, compare touch-me-not n. and adj.In form nolitangere in sense A. 3 apparently after the specific epithet noli-tangere in the scientific Latin name of the yellow balsam (see quot. 1837 at sense A. 3). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nōu·ləi mī tæ·ndʒĕrĭ) /ˈnəʊlaɪ miː ˈtændʒərɪ/.
