Etymology: < French nitrophénisique (in acide nitrophénisique : A. Laurent 1841, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 3 221) < nitro- nitro- comb. form + phène phene n. + -is- , arbitrary element + -ique -ic suffix.Part of a systematic nomenclature devised by A. Laurent in which nitrophenol, dinitrophenol, and trinitrophenol were respectively designated acide nitrophénasique , acide nitrophénésique , and acide nitrophénisique , with the change of medial vowel indicating successive products of substitution: compare nitrophenasic adj., nitrophenesic adj. Compare also French acide chlorophénésique, acide chlorophénisique (1836 or earlier).
