Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: Latin Parthenium , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Parthenium, genus name (see parthenium n.) + -in suffix1, after Spanish partenina (J. R. Tovar Cronica medico-quirurgica (1885) 11 36). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation of the form parthenine as (pā·ɹþĕnəin.) /ˈpɑːɹθənaɪn/.
Chemistry.
A compound isolated from the plant Parthenium hysterophorus, originally thought to be an alkaloid and used in the treatment of neuralgia and fevers, and later identified as a sesquiterpene lactone (C15H18O4) which is responsible for the allergic contact dermatitis associated with the plant.
