Etymology: < nocturn adj. + -labe comb. form, after astrolabe n. In form nocturlabe perhaps after French †nocturlabe (1643), with loss of medial -n- apparently as simplification of the consonant cluster -rnl- . Compare slightly earlier nocturnal adj. 1.
Now historical and rare.
