Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: acupuncture n., pressure n.1
Etymology: < acu- (in acupuncture n.) + pressure n.1 In sense 2 the English word was chosen to reflect the close association of this therapy with acupuncture (although no needles are used, so the element acu- is potentially misleading); compare Japanese -atsu pressure (in shiatsu , lit. ‘finger pressure’: see shiatsu n.).
1. Surgery. A method of controlling haemorrhage in which pressure is applied to the bleeding vessel by compressing it with a needle. Cf. retroclusion n. 1, torsocclusion n. Now historical.

1859 Proc. Royal Soc. Edinb. (1862) 4 249 Professor Simpson made a communication on acupressure, as a new mode of arresting surgical hæmorrhage.
