Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: nocti- comb. form, -o- connective, -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < nocti- comb. form + -o- connective + -graph comb. form. Compare French nyctographe machine enabling the blind to write or the sighted to write in the dark (see nyctograph n.). Compare also later nyctograph n.
A kind of writing-frame for a blind or partially-sighted person (see quots. 1864, 2001).Invented by Ralph Wedgwood. Best known because of its use by the American historian William H. Prescott (1796–1859).
