Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin multifarius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin multifarius (Vetus Latina; from 8th cent. in British sources; < multi- multi- comb. form + -farius : see bifarious adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare classical Latin multifāriam , adverb. Compare earlier multifary adj.In use as noun, after German das Mannigfaltige (e.g. in Kant Logik (1800, translated in quot. 1819 at sense B.)).
