Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin multifer , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin multifer productive, fruitful ( < multi- multi- comb. form + -fer -fer comb. form) + -ous suffix; compare -ferous comb. form. In sense 2 apparently by confusion with multifarious adj.A. P. de Candolle ( Théorie élémentaire de la bot. (1813) iii. 423) cites scientific Latin multifer with a French explanation; compare French multifère.
1. Botany. Of a plant: fruitful; spec. bearing fruit or flowers several times in the course of a year. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
