Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nihilitas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nihilitas nothingness (late 14th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin nihil nothing (see nihil n.) + -itās -ity suffix. Compare French nihilité (1595 in Middle French; 1406 as nichilité ). Compare earlier nihileity n., nihilhood n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nəihi·lĭti) /naɪˈhɪlɪtɪ/.
