单词 sheltie
释义

Sheltien.

Brit. /ˈʃɛlti/, U.S. /ˈʃɛlti/, Scottish English /ˈʃɛltɪ/
Forms:

α. 1800s shilty (Irish English (northern)), 1800s– sheltie, 1800s– shelty, 1800s– shiltie (Irish English (northern)); Scottish pre-1700 shalte, pre-1700 1700s scheltie, pre-1700 1700s– shaltie, pre-1700 1700s– shelty, 1700s shealty, 1700s– sheltie, 1800s shalty, 1800s shawltie, 1900s– sholtie.

β. Scottish (in sense 1) 1700s– shalt, 1800s shawlt, 1800s shilt, 1800s sholt, 1800s– shelt, 1800s– shault, 1900s– shult.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Norn, combined with an English element.
Etymology: Probably < the unattested early Norn reflex of an early Scandinavian word (see note) + -y suffix6 (or with ending remodelled after -y suffix6).Compare Old Icelandic Hjaltr (also Hjalti , in a byname), Old Norwegian Hjaltr (in bynames), Norwegian (now hist.) Hjelte , all in sense ‘inhabitant of Shetland’, early modern Norwegian hjelte- (in compounds) of or relating to Shetland: the early Scandinavian base of these was probably < the first element of the early Scandinavian name of Shetland (compare Old Icelandic Hjaltland : see Shetland n.). Compare also (rare) Older Scots Yelt (a1700), Scots Yalt (1711), both in sense ‘inhabitant of Shetland’ (reported as a self-designation), reflecting a Norn word attested (in genitive plural form) as the first element of the 17th-cent. Norn (Shetland) compounds Yealtaland Shetland, Yealtamole the Norn dialect of Shetland (both words reported in an English context). These forms suggest that by this time earlier Norn hj- may have become /j/. For the phonological development of the (originally Scandinavian) initial hj- into Scots sh- see discussion at Shetland n. Variant forms. The β. forms probably show a reduced form (with loss of the suffix), although (alternatively) it is not impossible that they continue an earlier unsuffixed form also reflected by Older Scots Yelt (see above). Specific senses. With sense 2 compare Jhone Schalte , the nickname of Orkneyman John Adamson, following a visit to Shetland (1516 in a legal document). With sense 3 compare slightly earlier Shetland collie n. at Shetland n. 7b.
Originally and chiefly Scottish.
